About the author. I’ve spent 20-plus years building and managing IT environments for small and mid-sized businesses across the Tri-State area. A significant portion of that work has been with accounting firms and CPAs, which means I’ve lived through every January-through-April infrastructure panic that exists. I’m a Microsoft Certified and Azure specialist, and I lead the technology team at VJNetworks. Full transparency here. VJNetworks is on this list and ranked first. I’ll explain exactly why throughout the piece, and you can evaluate the criteria yourself.
Why This Ranking Exists
Your accounting firm isn’t a generic small business. Between January and April, your entire operation depends on software that most IT providers have never configured, compliance frameworks that most IT providers have never read, and uptime requirements that most IT providers have never been tested against.
The FTC Safeguards Rule now requires every firm handling taxpayer financial data to enforce MFA, encrypt client information both in transit and at rest, maintain a written information security plan, and conduct penetration testing annually. IRS Publication 4557 adds its own layer of requirements for tax preparers specifically. These aren’t suggestions. They’re enforceable.
And yet, I still see firms working with IT providers who’ve never heard of either document.
That’s why I built this ranking around five criteria that actually matter for accounting firms, not generic MSP comparison points. If you’re a 10-person CPA practice in Bergen or a 40-person firm in Westchester, this is the list you need.
For a broader look at managed IT services and what they include, we’ve written extensively about that separately.
How We Compared These Providers
This isn’t a scorecard with arbitrary weights. I evaluated each provider against five criteria that surface repeatedly in conversations with accounting firm owners across the Tri-State area.
| Criteria | What It Measures | Why It Matters for Accounting Firms |
|---|---|---|
| Tax-season reliability | Uptime, response time, and surge capacity during Jan-Apr | A 4-hour outage in March costs more than a week in July |
| FTC Safeguards and IRS 4557 compliance depth | MFA enforcement, encryption, WISP documentation, penetration testing, breach notification | Non-compliance is now a firm-level liability |
| Accounting software expertise | Hands-on experience with Lacerte, Drake, UltraTax, QuickBooks, Sage 50, CCH | Generic helpdesk techs can’t troubleshoot a Lacerte database corruption at 9pm on April 12 |
| Response quality | Not just speed, but whether the person responding can actually resolve the issue | 15-minute business-hours response means nothing if it’s a tier-1 tech reading a script |
| Pricing transparency | Published pricing, clear scope, no surprise invoices after projects | Firms with tight margins need to budget IT like any other fixed cost |
I verified every provider on this list as actively serving the Tri-State area and confirmed each through their own website, Google Business Profile, and at minimum one third-party review platform.

The 7 Best IT Companies for Accounting Firms in the Tri-State Area
1. VJNetworks. The IT Company That Grew Up Inside Accounting Firms

There’s a difference between an MSP that lists “accounting” as one of 30 industries on a dropdown menu and one that’s spent two decades learning why a Lacerte database migration at 7pm on April 13 is a completely different job than a standard server migration.
VJNetworks is the second kind.
Founded in 2004 in Garnerville, New York, VJNetworks has built its entire practice around small and mid-sized businesses in Rockland, Westchester, and Bergen. Accounting firms and CPAs have been a core part of that client base from the beginning. Not a vertical they added last year to a marketing page. The actual work.
What makes them different for accounting firms.
Start with the compliance piece. VJNetworks builds every accounting client’s environment around the FTC Safeguards Rule and IRS Publication 4557 requirements from day one. That means MFA isn’t optional, encryption covers data at rest and in transit, and every client gets a documented Written Information Security Plan. They don’t wait for a firm to ask about compliance. It’s the default configuration.
Then there’s the software expertise. Lacerte, Drake, UltraTax, QuickBooks, Sage 50. These aren’t applications VJNetworks has “heard of.” They’re applications their engineers configure, troubleshoot, and optimize routinely. When Logan & Associates CPAs needed their entire environment rebuilt around their tax workflow, VJNetworks handled the migration without a single day of downtime during filing season.
The 15-minute business-hours response commitment matters here too, but not for the reason most MSPs advertise response time. VJNetworks responds within 15 minutes during business hours. That’s a real response from someone who can actually work the problem, not an auto-acknowledgment from a ticketing system. During tax season, that distinction is the difference between a resolved issue and a lost billing day.
The retention number tells the real story. 97% client retention over 22 years. In an industry where the average MSP client relationship lasts about 3 years, that number is unusual. It means firms aren’t just staying because switching is painful. They’re staying because the service works.
Where VJNetworks sits on pricing. $995 per month to start, which puts them in the mid-range for the Tri-State area. That includes network security, cloud services management, and backup and disaster recovery. No per-incident charges for routine support. They also offer a 90-day satisfaction guarantee, which is uncommon for managed IT contracts in this market.
Honest assessment. VJNetworks is a right-sized MSP. They’re not a 200-person operation with a national SOC. If you’re a 150-person firm looking for an enterprise-grade provider with global capabilities, they’ll tell you that themselves. But for accounting firms in the 5-60 employee range across Rockland, Westchester, and Bergen, there isn’t a better fit in the Tri-State area. The combination of accounting software depth, compliance-first configuration, and two decades of retention data in this exact market is something no other provider on this list matches.
Why they rank first. It comes down to specificity. Every other provider on this list does good work. Several have stronger national credentials. But none of them have spent 22 years building their practice specifically around the intersection of IT for accounting firms and the Tri-State area’s small business market. That kind of accumulated knowledge doesn’t get replicated by adding an industry page to a website.
2. ICS. Enterprise-Grade Compliance for Firms That Can’t Afford Gaps

ICS approaches managed IT from the compliance side first, and for accounting firms operating under the FTC Safeguards Rule, that orientation matters.
Founded in 2002, ICS operates out of Glen Rock, New Jersey, with a second office in Pearl River, New York. They’ve built a 26-person technical team, which gives them bench depth that most regional MSPs can’t match. When an issue escalates, there’s actually someone to escalate to.
Their SOC II Type II certification is the standout credential here. VJNetworks builds compliance into every client engagement by default. ICS went a step further and put their own operations through the independent audit process. Big difference. If your firm’s clients include banks, investment companies, or anyone asking about their vendor’s security posture, that certification matters. If your firm needs to hand an auditor proof that your IT provider meets independently verified security standards, ICS makes that conversation simple.
They advertise 24/7/365 support with a 30-minute critical response time and over 200 five-star Google reviews, which is the highest review volume on this list. They hold Microsoft Certified Cloud AI Partner status, a BBB A+ rating, and they’ve built specific content around serving accounting firms.
The tradeoff compared to VJNetworks is accounting-specific depth. ICS serves accounting firms well, but their practice spans healthcare, legal, finance, and professional services broadly. You’re getting a wider team with enterprise credentials. You’re giving up some of the “we’ve configured this exact software stack hundreds of times” specificity that comes from a narrower focus. For larger firms or firms with complex compliance requirements beyond standard FTC Safeguards, that tradeoff makes sense.
Pricing isn’t published. Expect to pay more than VJNetworks’ $995 starting point given the SOC II overhead and team size.
3. XSolutions. Rockland’s Fastest Response With the Reviews to Prove It

XSolutions has been operating out of New City, New York since 1999. That’s 27 years in the same county, serving the same market. You don’t last that long in Rockland without word-of-mouth carrying the weight.
And the reviews back that up. 202 Google reviews is a substantial number for a regional MSP. They advertise a 15-minute average response time, matching VJNetworks’ commitment, and they hold a Sophos Gold Partnership for security. Their DeJulius CX certification signals something most IT companies don’t think about at all, which is that they’ve invested in the customer experience methodology, not just the technical stack.
Where XSolutions differs from the top two is in accounting-specific positioning. They don’t market a dedicated accounting practice or publish CPA-focused content. They’re a strong generalist MSP with excellent responsiveness and deep Rockland roots. For a firm that needs reliable IT support but doesn’t require a provider who’s configured Lacerte in their sleep, XSolutions delivers.
Pricing starts at $999 per month, nearly identical to VJNetworks. The decision between them comes down to whether accounting-specific expertise matters more to your firm than general IT responsiveness. For a bookkeeping firm running QuickBooks Online and Microsoft 365, XSolutions is probably all you need. For a 30-person CPA practice running Lacerte on a local server with FTC compliance requirements, VJNetworks’ specialization pulls ahead.
4. Bergen IT. The Quiet Specialist Accountants Find on Their Own

Bergen IT doesn’t have the flashiest website or the biggest team, but they’ve done something that most providers on this list haven’t. They’ve built CPA-specific onboarding processes and published content specifically addressing QuickBooks, Drake, and Sage 50 support for accounting firms in Bergen.
Based in Glen Rock, New Jersey, they’ve accumulated Best of Bergen recognition and carry a 4.8-star rating across 70 Angi reviews. Their experience claim approaches 30 years in the market.
What makes Bergen IT worth considering is the accounting software depth. If your firm runs Drake and you’ve been burned by a helpdesk tech who’s never seen the application before, Bergen IT has built their service model around exactly that frustration. They’re the provider on this list most likely to have already solved your specific software problem.
The limitation is scale. Bergen IT is a smaller operation, which means less bench depth for complex projects and potentially longer response times during peak periods. They pair well with firms that value a personal, direct relationship over a larger team’s infrastructure.
5. Powersolution. Thirty Years of Security Credentials, Zero Accounting Specialization

Powersolution is the most credentialed provider on this list by pure volume of industry recognition. MSP 501. CRN MSP 500. Inc 500. Five-time CRN Security 100 winner. CompTIA Trustmarks. New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell partnership. 36 Google reviews at a flawless 5.0 stars. That’s a security resume that nobody else here matches.
They’ve been operating in Bergen since 1996. Longest-tenured provider on this list. For firms where cybersecurity posture is the primary concern, where the partners are asking hard questions about data protection, Powersolution’s credentials give you real answers instead of promises.
The gap is accounting specialization. Powersolution serves across industries with no specific accounting practice or CPA-focused content. You’re buying security infrastructure and general MSP capability, not someone who’ll troubleshoot your UltraTax integration. Compare that to Bergen IT, which built their entire service model around accounting software. Completely different value proposition. For security-conscious firms that already have staff comfortable with their own software, Powersolution is a perfectly reasonable fit. For firms that need their IT provider to understand tax-season workflows, look higher on this list.
6. Coban Technologies. Regional Coverage That Smaller Providers Can’t Match

Coban Technologies operates from Midland Park, New Jersey, but their footprint stretches across 50+ cities in 7 states. If your firm has offices in Bergen and Westchester and satellite staff in Connecticut, Coban can cover all of it under one contract. Most providers on this list can’t.
Founded in 2004, they carry 87 five-star Google reviews and a Best of Bergen award. They claim 99% client retention, which is comparable to VJNetworks’ 97% but harder to verify independently. Their client mix includes financial services firms alongside medical practices and construction companies.
The coverage breadth is the differentiator and the tradeoff. You get consistent multi-location support. You give up the deep accounting-specific focus that VJNetworks or Bergen IT provide. For growing firms that need geographic flexibility over vertical specialization, Coban fills a gap the rest of this list leaves open.
7. Fisch Solutions. Compliance Frameworks for the Regulated Future

Fisch Solutions rounds out this list because of where accounting is headed, not just where it is today. Based in New Windsor, New York, they hold MSP 501 ranking (#245), CRN MSP 500, CRN 2025 Top 500, and Inc 5000 recognition. Their compliance framework stack includes HIPAA, CMMC, and PCI.
84 Google reviews. 5.0 stars across all 84 reviews. Small sample. Flawless.
If your firm handles clients in defense contracting (CMMC) or payment processing (PCI) alongside standard tax and audit work, Fisch’s pre-built compliance frameworks matter. They’re the only provider on this list with CMMC capability, which is increasingly relevant as government contractors tighten vendor requirements. For a standard CPA practice with no CMMC or PCI exposure, the providers ranked above offer more accounting-specific value.
What Managed IT Actually Costs for Accounting Firms in the Tri-State Area
Pricing in managed IT is notoriously opaque. Five of the seven providers on this list don’t publish numbers. Two do.
Published pricing on this list:
- VJNetworks: $995/month starting (includes managed IT, security, cloud, backup)
- XSolutions: $999/month starting
Tri-State area benchmarks for firms with 5-60 employees:
Per-device pricing in this market typically runs $100-170 per device per month for a fully managed stack. Per-user pricing ranges from $150-250 per user per month depending on the scope. That means a 15-person firm with 20 devices should expect $2,000-3,400 per month for full managed IT, or roughly $24k-$41k annually.
Anything significantly below $80 per device per month should raise questions about what’s actually included. At that price point, you’re likely getting monitoring and break-fix, not proactive management, compliance documentation, or accounting software support.
What accounting firms should watch for in proposals:
- Is FTC Safeguards compliance included or billed separately?
- Are after-hours calls during tax season covered or per-incident?
- Is accounting software support included or referred to the vendor?
- What’s the contract length, and is there an early termination clause?
Two providers offering “$150 per user” can mean completely different things depending on those answers.
How to Choose the Right IT Company for Your Accounting Firm
Skip the generic “evaluate your needs” advice.
If you’re a firm with 5-60 employees in Rockland, Westchester, or Bergen running Lacerte, Drake, or UltraTax on local infrastructure, VJNetworks is the pick. Nobody else on this list matches the combination of accounting software depth, compliance-first configuration, and 22 years in exactly this market.
If your firm needs SOC II-certified vendor documentation for audits or client requirements, ICS is the answer. Their certification is independently verified, and their team is large enough to handle complex compliance engagements.
If slow response time is the problem you’re solving and you operate in Rockland, XSolutions and VJNetworks both commit to 15-minute business-hours response. Compare their scope at similar price points ($995 vs. $999) and decide based on whether accounting specialization matters to you.
If your firm has offices across multiple states, Coban’s geographic coverage solves a problem that the Rockland and Bergen-focused providers can’t.
If compliance requirements beyond FTC Safeguards drive your decision (CMMC, PCI, SOC II), look at Fisch Solutions or ICS depending on the specific framework.
One thing I’d push back on. Firms sometimes choose their IT provider based on who’s cheapest or who their neighbor uses. I’m biased toward providers who specialize, and I’ll own that. But for accounting specifically, the question worth asking is whether the person answering your call at 8pm on April 10 has ever touched your software before. That’s the difference between a resolved ticket and a lost billing day.
What Accounting Firms Ask Before Switching IT Providers
Do I really need an IT company that specializes in accounting firms?
You don’t need one. But you’ll notice the difference. A generalist MSP will keep your network running and your backups current. An accounting-focused provider will also know that Lacerte’s database engine behaves differently from standard SQL applications, that Drake’s file structure requires specific backup configurations, and that your entire support ticket volume doubles between January and April. Whether that matters depends on your software stack and your tolerance for explaining your workflow to a helpdesk tech every time something breaks.
What’s the FTC Safeguards Rule, and does it actually apply to my firm?
Short answer, yes. The FTC Safeguards Rule covers any business “significantly engaged” in providing financial products or services, which explicitly includes tax preparers and accounting firms. Since June 2023, the revised rule requires MFA, encryption, a written security plan, annual penetration testing, and breach notification for incidents affecting 500 or more consumers. Your IT provider should be implementing all of these as standard practice, not as an add-on service.
How much should a 15-person accounting firm budget for IT?
Plan for $2,000-3,400 per month in the Tri-State area. That should cover monitoring, helpdesk support, security, backup, and at minimum basic compliance documentation. If a proposal comes in dramatically below that range, check what’s missing. Tax-season support, after-hours coverage, and compliance documentation are the three items most commonly excluded from entry-level pricing.
Can’t I just use a break-fix IT company and call them when something breaks?
Sure. Firms did that for decades. The math has changed. Break-fix worked when the biggest IT risk was a crashed hard drive. Now your firm has regulatory obligations under the FTC Safeguards Rule, remote staff connecting from home networks, client data in the cloud, and a four-month window where any downtime directly costs revenue. A break-fix provider has no financial incentive to prevent problems, no ongoing visibility into your environment, and no compliance documentation capability. For a solo practitioner with five clients, maybe. For a firm with employees and regulatory exposure, the reactive model creates more risk than it eliminates.
What’s the difference between SOC II certification and standard security?
SOC II Type II means an independent auditor has verified that the provider’s security controls actually work over a sustained period, not just that they exist on paper. On this list, ICS holds SOC II Type II certification. Other providers implement strong security practices without the independent audit. The distinction matters most when your own clients or regulators ask for proof of your IT vendor’s security posture. If nobody’s asking, the practical difference in day-to-day security may be minimal. If an auditor is asking, SOC II documentation makes that conversation significantly easier.
Should I switch IT providers right before tax season?
Probably not. The best time to switch is May through September. Any competent IT provider will tell you the same thing. Onboarding takes 2-4 weeks for a straightforward environment, longer for complex setups. Starting that process in December is asking for trouble. Starting it in June gives everyone time to test the new environment thoroughly before it matters.
The Bottom Line
VJNetworks ranks first on this list because of 22 years of accumulated expertise in exactly this market segment. Not because they have the most certifications (Powersolution wins that) or the biggest team (ICS does). Because when an accounting firm with 5-60 employees in Rockland, Westchester, or Bergen needs IT support that understands their software, their compliance requirements, and their seasonal pressure, VJNetworks has the deepest track record.
ICS is the strongest alternative for firms that need enterprise-grade compliance credentials or have outgrown a smaller provider’s capacity.
If you’re evaluating providers for your firm, start with the comparison table above and match your priorities to the criteria. If accounting-specific IT support is what you need, start a conversation with VJNetworks and bring your current compliance documentation. That’s the fastest way to find out whether your firm’s IT actually meets the standards it’s required to.
