The part nobody explains clearly

Cloud migration isn’t really about the cloud. It’s about what’s running underneath everything right now.

1 Support end dates don’t move

Microsoft doesn’t negotiate on these dates.

Extended support for Windows Server 2012 R2 already ended on October 10, 2023. Windows Server 2016’s extended support ends January 12, 2027, according to Microsoft’s own Windows Server blog. Windows Server 2019 follows on January 9, 2029. Once a version passes its date, security patches stop arriving. The server doesn’t announce it. It just keeps running, quietly unpatched.

2 The honest question

The real question isn’t “is the cloud better.”

It’s whether you’d rather pick the timing yourself or let a hardware failure pick it for you. A server that’s five, six, seven years past purchase, running an OS version nobody patches anymore, isn’t a modernization project waiting to happen. It’s a countdown. What’s the difference between migrating to Microsoft 365 and Azure?

They solve different problems, not competing versions of the same one. Microsoft 365 replaces on-premises email, file shares, and collaboration tools with Exchange Online, SharePoint, and Teams. Azure hosts full virtual servers, so a file server or line-of-business application that can’t just move to Microsoft 365 gets rebuilt as a virtual machine instead. Most small businesses migrating off an aging server need some combination of both, not a choice between them.

Why does a Windows Server end-of-life date matter enough to migrate now?

Because Microsoft’s dates don’t move. Extended support for Windows Server 2012 R2 already ended October 10, 2023. Windows Server 2016 loses support January 12, 2027, and 2019 follows on January 9, 2029. Once a server’s version passes its date, it stops getting security patches, and it keeps running exactly as before, quietly getting less safe every month.

Will we lose data or have downtime during the migration?

Not if it’s planned correctly, which is the entire point of how we run these. We use a soft-cutover approach, the same technique we’ve relied on for mailbox migrations for years, where old and new systems stay in sync until the cutover is confirmed working. Nobody shows up Monday to a broken login.

What happens to security once everything moves to the cloud?

It doesn’t take care of itself, and we won’t tell you it does. Once workloads land in Azure or Microsoft 365, we harden access controls, monitoring, and backups around the new environment as part of our managed cybersecurity work, the same way we do for every VJNetworks client.

What does a server or cloud migration cost?

$995 a month is the floor for our managed IT plans, which is usually where ongoing support after a migration lives. The migration project itself gets scoped and quoted separately based on how many servers and how much data are actually moving. We give you a real number after the assessment, not a guess.

Can we just handle the migration ourselves?

Technically, sure, and plenty of businesses try. Gartner has found that 83% of data migration projects either fail outright or run over budget and schedule, and it’s rarely bad luck or bad technology behind that number. It’s nobody mapping the dependencies first. If you’re set on doing it in-house, at minimum get a second set of eyes on the plan before you start moving anything.
